The nervous system is a network of nerve cells and fibers that transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body. The nervous tissue is composed of two main cell types: neurons and glial cells. The neurons are used to transmit specific nerve messages. Glial cells are in direct contact with the neurons and often times surround the neurons. The neuron is the unit of the nervous system and we contain over 100 billion neurons in our brain alone. We have three types of neurons; sensory, motor and interneurons. The sensory neurons carry nerve messages from sensory receptors to the central nervous system. Motor neurons transmit messages from the central nervous system to muscles or glands. Interneurons are only found within the central nervous system in which their job is to connect neurons.
This is a small introduction into our own nervous system. The nervous system is a complex system which is also delicate. Our website will introduce you to the various phylums nervous systems. Furthermore you will also have access to some individual animals.
