Cnidaria
Important Information
Their nervous system is also considered a nerve net. Their nerve net surrounds their whole body. Some jellyfish such as the Aurelia have specialized structures called rhophalia. The rhophalia have receptors for light called ocelli, balance called statocysts, chemical detection called olfaction and touch called sensory lappets. When the animal's body is tilted the statocyst makes contact with the cilium causing it to bend which allows action potentials to fire in the nerve. Through all of this the information provided it allows muscles to move.
Coral(Dendrogyra cylindricus): Corals are marine invertebrates living in compact colonies of identical individuals.
There is no centralization of the nervous system leaving them without brains. Neurons communicate whenever they cross paths which is called en passant synapse. They are sent in all directions and lay between two layers. These nerve cells interact with sensory and contractile cells.
Box Jellyfish(Chironex fleckeri): Box jellyfish are distinguished by their cube-shaped medusae. Box jellyfish are known for the extremely potent venom.
The nervous system of a box jellyfish consists of four eye clusters with twenty four eyes on each cluster. It is believed that through these clusters they can distinguish color. They also possess a nerve ring which is located around the base of the umbrella.
- They are exclusively found in aquatic and mostly marine environments
- Their distinguishing feature is cnidocytes, specialized cells that they use mainly for capturing prey.
- Cnidaria do not have brains or groups of nerve cells but rather they have nerve nets.
